WoW Forever Frosthowl Quest: Location & Sack of Fish

Find Frosthowl in the Grizzled Den, recover the Sack of Fish, return to Gretta Ganter, and fix common quest-credit problems during launch.

Frosthowl quest quick answer

Frosthowl is an Alliance level 9 quest in Dun Morogh. Accept it from Gretta Ganter in Brewnall Village, travel southeast to the Grizzled Den west of Kharanos, work through the cave, defeat Frosthowl, loot the Sack of Fish and return the item to Gretta. The quest record is 98326. The checked records describe it as new to WoW Forever rather than a Classic Era quest.

2. TravelHead southeast toward the Grizzled Den, the wendigo cave west of Kharanos. You are entering the cave tied to the quest, not stopping at surface wendigos.
3. HuntClear inward until you reach the named Frosthowl. You have room to fight without adding nearby enemies.
4. LootDefeat Frosthowl and take the Sack of Fish. The item is in your bags and the objective is complete.
5. ReturnGo back to Gretta Ganter. The quest is ready to turn in before you leave Brewnall Village.

This page organizes source records into a route checklist. We have not completed the quest in-game, so it does not claim a measured respawn timer, a guaranteed solo difficulty or a route tested on every Forever build.

Where to accept Frosthowl

Gretta Ganter starts and ends Frosthowl in Brewnall Village. Two checked databases place her around 31.5–31.6, 44.6 in Dun Morogh. Small coordinate differences are normal between displays, so use the NPC name and village as the primary identifiers. She is listed as a fisherman-supplies vendor as well as the quest giver.

The records agree that this is an Alliance quest and that its quest level is 9. One walkthrough lists a minimum level of 5, while the record-focused source says the required level is not present in the data it can use. Treat level 5 as a secondary guide claim, not a requirement independently established by our site. If Gretta does not offer the quest, first confirm your faction, current level and the exact NPC. Do not assume a missing marker proves a hidden prerequisite: the checked quest record lists no preceding or following chain.

Before leaving the village, open the quest log and read the objective. You need the Sack of Fish from the named Frosthowl. Killing ordinary wendigos is useful only for reaching the target safely; those kills do not replace the required item. Keep enough bag space to loot the quest object, and decide whether you want another player nearby if a named level-9 enemy is likely to be difficult for your character.

How to find Frosthowl in the Grizzled Den

From Brewnall Village, travel southeast toward the Grizzled Den. The cave is west of Kharanos. The practical distinction is between the outdoor wendigo area and the cave interior: Frosthowl is described deep inside the Grizzled Den, so clearing a few enemies near the entrance and then waiting outside will not complete the task.

  1. Set Gretta’s village as your return point mentally before leaving. You will hand the item back to the same NPC.
  2. Follow the normal Dun Morogh route toward Kharanos, but turn toward the Grizzled Den west of it.
  3. At the cave, recover health and resources before entering. Caves make accidental extra pulls harder to escape.
  4. Move inward deliberately, clearing the enemies that block your path. Avoid running past several wendigos unless you already know they will not follow.
  5. Look for the named Frosthowl rather than another generic cave enemy. If the target is absent, check the troubleshooting section before abandoning the quest.

The sources we checked provide a map marker in an embedded guide, but the accessible text does not expose a stable numerical coordinate for Frosthowl himself. We therefore do not invent one. The reliable route evidence is the Grizzled Den cave, west of Kharanos, with the target deeper inside. If an addon shows a marker, use it as a navigation aid while still confirming the NPC name before attacking.

Do not confuse Frosthowl with the similarly named quest title. The quest asks for a specific dropped item, so reaching the correct location is only half the job. Plan the return path as you clear: a clean corridor reduces the chance of picking up a new pack while leaving with low health.

Defeat Frosthowl and loot the Sack of Fish

Frosthowl is a named level 9 wendigo. One checked walkthrough reports that he hits harder than nearby wendigos and can heal himself. Because that is guide evidence rather than a spell record independently captured by this site, treat it as preparation advice: enter with health and resources, interrupt or pressure a visible heal if your class can, and bring help if the fight is not comfortable at your level.

Clear nearby enemies before starting. Fighting a named target plus an accidental add is a different difficulty from fighting Frosthowl alone. Ranged characters should keep enough space to move without backing into another pack. Melee characters should save a defensive or recovery option rather than spending every resource on the approach. If another player is already fighting him, avoid assuming that tagging or group-credit behavior will match another version of WoW; watch your own objective and loot eligibility.

After the kill, loot Frosthowl and verify that one Sack of Fish is actually in your bags. A completed kill animation is not the same as obtaining the item. If the corpse cannot be looted by you, or the item does not appear, check whether you received objective credit before leaving the cave. Do not delete an unfamiliar quest item while making bag space.

The quest is complete only when the objective updates and the Sack of Fish is secured. If you die after the kill but before looting, return to the cave and inspect the situation rather than assuming the item was mailed or credited automatically. The source records do not establish such a fallback.

Return the Sack of Fish to Gretta Ganter

Retrace the route to Brewnall Village and speak to Gretta Ganter at the same location used to accept the quest. Before opening the turn-in panel, confirm that the quest log marks Frosthowl ready and that the Sack of Fish remains in your inventory.

The two checked sources disagree about the reward record. The record-focused page says it cannot list an item or reputation reward from the source data available to it. The walkthrough lists Frosthowl’s Footwarmers, 780 experience, 3 silver, and 100 reputation each with Ironforge and Gnomeregan Exiles. Inspect the actual quest-completion panel in your current client before treating those numbers as guaranteed. Beta and launch records can change, and the in-game panel is the decision point for your character.

If Footwarmers are offered, compare the current stats with what you are wearing rather than judging the item only by its name. A low-level reward may be useful for one class and disposable for another. This site’s talent calculator does not import your equipment, so finishing the quest will not change a saved build here.

Frosthowl troubleshooting

Gretta Ganter does not show the quest

Confirm you are in Brewnall Village at the correct NPC, on an Alliance character, and looking for quest 98326. The record lists no quest chain, but the checked sources do not fully agree on a minimum level. Gain a level or recheck the current quest log before assuming the guide’s location is wrong.

Frosthowl is not inside the cave

Make sure you have moved beyond the entrance and are in the Grizzled Den west of Kharanos. A named quest target may already have been defeated by another player. Wait only as long as is reasonable for the current area; the sources reviewed here do not provide a verified respawn timer. Changing layers or groups can affect what you see, but this page does not prescribe a layer exploit or claim a guaranteed reset.

The Sack of Fish did not appear

Check your own loot eligibility, inventory space and quest-objective state. Verify that you defeated the named Frosthowl, not a regular wendigo. If the objective remains incomplete, repeat only after confirming the previous attempt did not credit you; that avoids leaving the cave with the wrong assumption.

The quest looks completed but Gretta will not accept it

Open the quest log and confirm the required item is still present. Return to the same Gretta Ganter in Brewnall Village. If the current client displays different text or requirements, follow the live quest log and report the discrepancy with the quest ID rather than deleting the quest immediately.

Quest identity, objective, giver, faction and record context were checked against the SenseOS Frosthowl record, based on game-file and beta-client data.
